Protecting indoor air is more important than ever. As we figure out how to share indoor spaces in the safest way possible, we still have to consider the impact of pollution on indoor air quality. The EPA’s findings that indoor air could be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air are still relevant. In retail establishments, medical facilities, hotels, office buildings, and other places where employees and visitors mix, taking steps to reduce airborne toxins and pathogens will be a vital part of our lives indefinitely.
Which is why we developed Molekule Air Pro. Our air purifier family already has our standard Molekule Air, our small device Air Mini, and our FDA-cleared device for medical and industrial uses, Air Pro RX. Molekule Air Pro is designed with an advanced touch screen interface and a high rate of air flow to clean the air in large or highly-trafficked areas while still blending seamlessly into the design aesthetic of any space. Like our other products, it’s scientifically proven to capture and destroy the widest spectrum of pollutants in the air to provide an additional level of comfort and security to your staff and customers.
Highly trafficked or large areas
Molekule Air Pro can move as much as three times the air flow of our other consumer devices. It’s designed to clean the air of a room up to 1,000 square feet. It’s a good choice for foyers, conference rooms, and open-plan office spaces.
Like Molekule Air, Air Pro can be controlled remotely via the app. Its vegan leather handle also makes it easy to move to wherever building occupants happen to be. As a standalone device, Molekule Air Pro is easy to use and could not be simpler to install. Requiring no HVAC retrofitting or special voltages, Molekule Air Pro can be up and running in minutes after delivery.
While the filters need to be changed every six months, monitoring filter life on the app or device is simple and with our filter subscription program new filters arrive just in time with no hassle. Our top-notch enterprise support team is just a phone call away if any issues do arise.
Automatic detection and air quality control
In order for occupants to understand more about their indoor air quality, Molekule Air Pro can detect three sizes of particle pollution. The sensor inside the devices samples the air and looks for PM1.0 (smoke), PM2.5 (dust), and PM10 (pollen), then displays the overall particle-based air quality both on the touchscreen and on the main app screen. Swiping left on the touchscreen reveals the relative concentrations of all three of the particle sizes, and which ones may be most impacting the air quality.
Molekule Air Pro can be set to automatically react to the particles in the air it detects with auto-protect mode, which comes in two settings. Standard auto protect mode will ramp the fan up if the device detects a high concentration of particles. You can hear it change more quickly if conditions get particularly hazardous. In Quiet auto protect mode, Air Pro will still react by increasing the fan speed in the presence of increasing airborne particle concentration, but won’t increase through the entire range of fan speeds, which can potentially disturb nearby work sessions or conference calls.
There are also 6 manual speeds for full control over the device. The higher speeds really push a lot of air and will clean air at the highest rate of speed possible for the device.
PECO technology
We put PECO technology in all of our devices to clean the air. PECO destroys the widest range of indoor pollutants, oxidizing allergens, VOCs, mold, viruses, or any other organic substance. Our filters are also designed to capture airborne particles to improve air quality in multiple ways.
Just like our other devices, we’ve made data on Air Pro’s performance available. It was tested in multiple different laboratories, including air quality experts Aerosol Research and Engineering Laboratories (ARE) and the Nationally Recognized Testing Lab Intertek.
The team at ARE performed a few different experiments to test Molekule Air Pro on virus removal. They placed the device in a sixteen cubic meter chamber and challenged it with a few different pollutants. They used inert particles of plastic first, then moved on to live viruses. For the plastic particles, they selected a few different sizes, which you can see below. The smallest particles were around 0.35 microns, about the size of a single particle of smoke.
Within 15 minutes of Air Pro running, the lab equipment could no longer detect particles. This represents about 99.9% removal of the particles by Air Pro. Just to compare they also ran a similar test without the device running, and the vast majority of particles remained airborne in the chamber after 15 minutes.
The lab then tested samples of live airborne virus particles. The lab selected the proxy virus MS2 bacteriophage which is about 0.3 microns in size. This is smaller than most other viruses, so MS2 serves as a good proxy for the capture and destruction of pathogenic viruses. The results are below.
After 30 minutes on speed 6 Air Pro reduced airborne virus concentration by more than log 4, which is more than 99.99% reduction. At speed 3 about 99% of the viruses were removed in 30 minutes, and 99.99% in 60 minutes.
We also looked at the Air Pro PECO filters for the presence of collected viruses at 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours. At least 99.9% of the viruses were destroyed at the 24 hour mark.
Molekule Air Pro also spent some time at Intertek to test VOC removal. We selected two VOCs, d-limonene and formaldehyde. D-Limonene is a terpene found in citrus plants and is literally the smell of oranges and lemons. Skin allergies are sometimes caused by d-limonene and it has a tendency to form more dangerous substances when it reacts with other pollutants in the air. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and in the aldehyde family of compounds, and commonly found in indoor air. It enters the home in the composite woods included in many different types of flooring and furniture.
We used their standard thirty cubic meter chamber, which is about a 10x10x10 foot bedroom. The results on VOC removal are represented below.
98% of d-limonene was removed with about an hour. Formaldehyde was reduced by 80% during the eight-hour duration of the test.
We make performance data for all of our devices available on our website.
